Kyle Thrash has made searing, sweeping mini-documentaries about American life for hard rock bands, including the ones for Every Time I Die and Microwave that were both nominated at the UKMVAs last year. Now comes something rather different for North Carolina alternative rock outfit Rainbow Kitten Surprise: a revealing and tender portrait of four drag queens in Louisiana.

The New York-based director takes us into their world, weaving interviews with his subjects – Kev Davis aka Xia Maddix, Ryan McCaleb aka Auda Beaux Di, Rickie Hill aka Rikkii Redd, and Justin Scarbrough aka Britnee Alexander - with the band's track Hide. And crucially each of them have reached a critical points where they have decided not to hide, and to reveal their 'drag queen' alter-egos to some unsuspecting loved ones.

Thrash addresses the tension and potential conflict between self-expression and family bonds - which leads to a nailbiting climax. But ultimately this is a life-affirming story of love and acceptance, while also doing its fundamental job in showcasing the band - who also appear in performance (they have just released their album Friend, Love, Freefall). More impressive work from the talented Mr Thrash.
